If that means ordering a juicy burger or a fried chicken sandwich so messy you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to wear a dress shirt, so be it!

We’re not talking about cheap or fast food. These are eateries that satisfy your inner-foodie without the boujee trappings. Food prepared by trained, well-respected chefs so you can enjoy an upscale experience without fancy tablecloths and at wallet-friendly prices. LOUNGING AT THE LUXURY The most casual concept from powerhouse chef/restaurateur Andrew Weissman sports a name that plays on the relaxed surroundings. The Luxury is an open-air plot of land adjacent to the San Antonio Museum of Art, just off Broadway. Refurbished railroad cargo cars are now the kitchen, bar, and bathrooms, and a bocce court sits behind the drink car.

Chef and partner Luis Colón’s creation features house-ground brisket with heavy cream in the grind. It is grilled and placed on a butter-toasted housemade bun. Final burger touches include Folc sauce (similar to Thousand Island dressing) accompanies a seared slice of poached pork belly, an over-easy egg, and homemade pickles.

Even though the seating is all outside, plenty of corrugated metal canopies offer shade over the picnic tables. And there’s a row of wooden swings, for relaxed lounge time overlooking the San Antonio River. The menu focuses mostly on sandwiches and finger food. The menu changes often, so when the buttermilk marinated fried chicken sandwich is available, make sure to snag it. The chicken, like other items on the menu, is sourced from local and sustainable producers. Meanwhile, the fries are still among the best, if not the best, in the city. Stand in line at the bar car to wash down those good dishes with something from their refreshing beer and wine selection. ROMPING ON THE FOLC BURGER AT BEXAR PUB A couple of years ago, Texas Monthly called the burger from Folc restaurant the “greatest burger in Texas,” and it was incredible. thesanantonioriverwalk.com

The restaurant closed because of a dispute with the landlord, but the burger lives on at Bexar Pub, an icehouse just east of Interstate 37 on the edge of downtown. With shaded picnic tables facing the freeway and a small indoor bar with only a handful of seats, the surroundings are much more humble than Folc. Fortunately, the flavor of the burger still shines brightly.

Colón oversees the kitchen, which excels on the burger and also makes a delicious fried chicken sandwich and some outstanding fried chicken. SANDWICHES OR SMOKED GOODNESS AT DIGNOWITY MEATS At lunch, this local favorite offers sandwiches featuring RIO Magazine

Sit outside at one of the metal tables or stay inside among the mid-century interior and fill the jukebox for smooth, soulful sounds. Either way, it’s a great time. Tucker’s

house-smoked meats, such as satisfying smoked pastrami, smoked turkey, and terrific smoked bologna. The dinner menu also offers pulled pork and mouth-watering fried chicken quarters. Order at the bar and grab a craft beer while you’re there. Then snag a seat at one of the outdoor tables and pick up your food when it’s ready. There’s no indoor seating, but there is plenty of covered areas and fans to help create a breeze. Besides, there’s something about sitting in the open-air venue that makes a cold beer taste that much better. As a bonus, Thursday is trivia night, and it brings a crowd. MORE IS BETTER AT TUCKER’S At Tucker’s Kozy Korner, the longtime East Side hangout celebrates the over-the-top creations of chef and co-owner Jeff White. In the days when White headed the kitchen at Boiler House, he gained a following for his dishes that piled on ingredients for glorious

overloads of flavors. He continues in that style with dishes such as a double-meat burger with double cheese, a grilled cheese sandwich with pulled pork and Mexican street corn, and Nashville-style hot chicken wings with housemade pickles, to name a few. Sit outside at one of the metal tables or stay inside among the mid-century interior and fill the jukebox for smooth, soulful sounds. Either way, it’s a great time. Make a special trip for Sunday brunch, when Tucker’s breaks out its beloved fried chicken with a crisp Belgian waffle. Pair it with a mimosa or bloody mary and Sunday turns into the best day of the week. SIPPING TASTEFULLY AT KÜNSTLER BREWING Head brewer and co-owner Vera Deckard turns out an impressive array of beers that change periodically and are available by the pint or flight. The brewery name

means “artist” in German and refers to the concentration of artists and galleries nearby. Of course, it can refer to a talented brewer, too. Make sure to grab a snack to pair with the beers. You can’t go wrong with a giant pretzel or a charcuterie board, but also consider the pimento cheese served with saltines and Fritos, or have some fun with the pimento cheese that’s paired with an obatzda, a Bavarian cheese spread of Camembert, butter, and beer—it’s called Germany vs.Texas. CASUAL FARE, HIGH STANDARDS So remember, it’s still possible to enjoy a good meal with high culinary standards without going to a swanky venue or paying upscale prices; you just have to know where to look.

TAKE A DRIVE TO THE WILD SIDE Everyone loves animals (or else how do you explain all those viral videos), so why not bring your date to Texas’ most popular safari drive-thru, Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch? The actual drive is 6-miles in length and takes roughly an hour-and-a-half to two hours to complete. Opportunity awaits around every winding turn to view animal behaviors that some people travel the globe to witness. You can even feed the animals from your vehicle. The animals will come right up to your car and grab a tasty morsel. But don’t be stingy! A particularly hungry zebra might stick their head in if they do not feel like they got their “fair share.” Travel through the ranch as many times as you like for different experiences and encounters. Located 35-minutes from downtown San Antonio in the scenic Texas Hill Country, the ranch’s landscape, flora, and fauna 16 RIO Magazine

look just like that of South Africa. The nearly 500-acre ranch is divided into four compounds: Tower Creek, Tatonka Range, Kenyan Preserve and Massai Savannah. At Tower Creek, and you can feed Nakato and his twin sister Wasswa, the first set of living reticulated giraffe twins “born in the U.S.A.” (A group of giraffes is called a “tower.”) Visit Bertha and Goliath, an adult breeding-age pair of Southern White Rhinoceroses. (A group of rhinos is called a “crash.”) The 1,100-square-foot free-flowing spring pool at Lemur Island mimics the habitat of the islands of Madagascar. Or experience the petting barnyard and walkabout full of black and white lemurs, ringtail lemurs, African pygmy goats, kangaroos, scarlet macaw and Amazon parrots. b’s Jaco ll We JUMP IN THE LAKE (OR THE WELL) Or why not take your kids or date (or both) and jump in a well? Spend the day at Jacob’s Well Natural Area located in Hays County about an hour-andfifteen-minute drive from downtown San Antonio. Jacob’s Well is an artesian spring that releases thousands of gallons of water a day. It was discovered in the early 1850s by William C. Winters, who exclaimed, “Like unto a well in Bible times!” and named his discovery Jacob’s Well. The source of the water is the Trinity Aquifer, which makes its way from an extensive underground cave system. Jacob’s Well is the second-largest, fully-submerged cave in Texas. The deepest part of the cavern system is 140-feet deep. The main cavern length is 4,341 feet and the secondary cavern, which branches off the main cavern, is 1,314 feet in length.

Call it what you want, but the water temperature in the well stays a constant 68°F, the perfect temperature to cool off in the summer. The size of Jacob’s Well Natural Area is a little more than 81 acres with picnic tables located throughout the park, along with hiking trails, geocaching, birding, scenic photography and a children’s play area.

LANDA THE FREE AND HOME OF THE DATE Take a 40-45 minute getaway from downtown to the quaint city of New Braunfels where Landa Park is the perfect place to spend the day playing in paddle boats on the lake, get competitive in a round of miniature golf, or riding the miniature train under the shade of giant, ancient oak trees. Walk or jog on the marked trails, frolic on the playground or hike the Panther Canyon Nature Trail. Take the William and Dolores Schumann Arboretum walking tour to learn about more than 50 species of trees. During Landa Lake Date Night on Friday, Aug. 17, couples can cruise or anchor their paddleboats for a special evening under the moonlit skies. And on Saturday, Aug. 18, the entire family can join Spass Walking Tours of New Braunfels to explore the history and beauty of Landa Park and on a two-mile walk during this interpretative tour. Discover man-made and natural treasures and hear stories about the people that made Landa Park a significant part of this community.

Spend the day on the cypress-lined banks of Cibolo Creek at Boerne City Park, a unique natural setting that shares a border with Cibolo Creek. Take a dip in the pool during free swim from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. and extend your day trip into the evening with the August Movie in the Park, “The Little Mermaid” on Friday, Aug, 17. Great exercise, communing with nature and perhaps a wildlife experience or two awaits you on the Cibolo Nature Trails at the Cibolo Nature Center and Farm, located roughly 40 minutes north of downtown in Boerne. Spend a Saturday strolling through the Farmer’s Market shopping for local, homemade, organic, fresh food while participating in fun workshops, kids crafts, garden and historic home tours. Or bring your lawn chairs, blankets, drinks, eats, kids, grandparents and

friendly dogs (on leashes) and mosey on down for an evening of live music, dancing and fun at the “Moondance Concert,” a good, oldfashioned outdoor jamboree, on Saturday, Aug. 25. Boerne City Park and Cibolo Nature Center and Farm are both located in the city of Boerne (pronounced BUR-nee) about 45 minutes northwest of downtown San Antonio.

When the summer heats up, so does the entertainment action in San Antonio. Festivals start the month off with a film fanfare August 1-5, as the San Antonio Film Festival rolls into town. You might call it SanDance. 20 RIO Magazine

This is the 24th year for the festival, now the largest annual film fest in South Texas, and each year the excitement builds as the buzz grows. Dozens of indie films, from shorts to feature presentations will be screened for thousands of movie buffs during the five-day festival. Unlike exclusive events like the Cannes Film Festival, San Antonio organizers have maintained a down-home approach, even to the glitziest events. Everyone is welcome, and tickets to both workshops and screenings are far more affordable than even many “Moviepaloozas,” from Cannes to L.A. This year’s action is held at the elegant new Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, right on the

River Walk in the heart of downtown. Artists, producers and diehard film fans from Hollywood, New York and around the world will gather to see narrative, documentary, animated films and more, accompanied by workshops, meet-the-artists sessions and a star-spangled awards ceremony. Last year, legendary Hollywood talent agent and producer, a frequent collaborator of Martin Scorsese, whose clients included Robert de Niro, Harye Keitel, Jodie Foster and Peter Bogdanovich, attended and accepted a special Lifetime Achievement Award here just a few months before his death. CHILLIN’ WITH MOZART Moved by Mozart? You’ll love Mozart Festival Texas. The festival runs for two weekends, July 28-29 and August 4-5, at the University of the Incarnate Word’s spectacular Concert Hall, with its sinuous, silvery, sculptural façade.

The real festival stars, though, are the movies. Two documentaries are among this year’s hottest titles --an ESPN movie about NBA Hall of Famer and former San Antonio Spurs legend George “The Iceman” Gervin, and a documentary on meditation featuring uber-cool director David Lynch. Headlined feature films include “The Butterfly Tree,” a family saga about the love between a burlesque queen and a father and son. The musical action includes a carefully curated selection showcasing Mozart’s wide-ranging composing genius, from orchestral and opera to chamber music pieces, accompanied by masterworks by some of his contemporaries. Mozart fans from around the nation flock to the event, founded by conductor Terence Frazor, with the Mozart Festival Orchestra and various soloists and ensembles. Since the university lies along the Broadway Cultural Corridor, the trip there from downtown is dotted with tempting stops to explore, from the magnificent Witte and McNay Museums to the family-friendly DoSeum and the riverine shade of Brackenridge Park, also home to the San Antonio Zoo. When making a date with Mozart, pencil in time for some serious side-tripping.

Latin Roots Festival

LATIN ROOTS San Antonio’s long roots in Latino culture have been on display in hundreds of colorful events around town in this 300th anniversary year. We’re not just talking one culture, but a fantastically diverse set of customs, costumes, cuisines and musical traditions from Spain and the Canary Islands to Central and South America. The annual Latin Roots Music and Food Festival, hosted by the Association of Puerto Ricans in San Antonio, gets jazzed up for the city’s 300th birthday. This fabulous August 4 event is a daylong celebration of the different Latin themes that harmonize in San Antonio’s multi-cultural symphony. And it’s free to all. The venue is La Villita’s central Maverick Plaza, near the city’s early Spanish settlement here -- a spectacularly picturesque setting for a rocking party.

In San Antonio, you don’t have to look far to find the spicy side of life; from food and drink to dance and roller-coasters we know how to heat-up your palette and your emotions. B.I.G. Salsa Festival at the Grand Hyatt Show off your smooth Latin moves at the 7th Annual Baile International Grand (B.I.G.) Salsa Festival August 9-13 at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio on the River Walk. Can’t dance? Take advantage of workshops led by some of the best salsa instructors and choreographers in the country, or sit back and enjoy the show from the VIP area. This four-day-long extravaganza packed with dance performances, concerts, and social dancing will turn up the heat on the floor. Born in New York City in the 1960s and ‘70s, salsa mixes the traditional beats of Cuban (son) and Puerto Rican (bomba and plena) music with influences from American jazz and blues. Primarily a dance genre, salsa features syncopated arrangements in clave rhythms (five-stroke patterns), Spanish lyrics and a strong rhythmic pulse punctuated by trumpet or trombone. Salsa has grown far beyond New York, becoming the emblematic music for much of Latin America, and encompasses a variety of tempos and song styles, including guaracha, son, and mambo to name a few. Grammy-nominated Puerto Rican superstar Jerry Rivera, the bestselling salsa artist in history, pays tribute to the late Frankie Ruiz, who popularized the sensual salsa style. Joseph Amado channels the spirit of Héctor Lavoe, known as “El Cantante” (the singer) for some of salsa’s biggest hits of the ‘70s. Puerto Rican singer and composer Moncho Rivera honors 1950s bomba and plena star Ismael Rivera, dubbed “El Sonero Mayor” (The Greatest Latin Singer). Chunky’s Burger’s 4 Horsemen Challenge If you have asbestos-lined taste buds and a cast-iron stomach, you might be ready for the city’s spiciest food challenge. Watch brave souls who attempt the challenge on YouTube.com. Loaded with fresh jalapeño, (up to 8,000 units on the Scoville heat scale), Serrano (23,000 units) and the dreaded Jolokia ghost peppers (more than 1 million mouth-burning units) fired up by a spicy habanero sauce (325,000 units), the “4 Horsemen” at San Antonio’s Chunky’s Burger has been named the “hottest burger on the planet” by Travel Channel’s “Man vs. Food.” This burger is so ferociously spicy; you are required to sign a liability waiver before you can dig in. Only about 10 percent of the brave souls who attempt the 4 Horseman Challenge manage to complete it. You must be 18 years or older to sign the “4 Horsemen Liability Waiver,” or have a parent/guardian’s permission. The rules are simple. You must eat every fiery mouthful of the burger in 25 minutes, then keep your cool for another five minutes. You are not allowed to eat anything besides the burger. No restroom breaks, sharing, spitting or double tasting allowed. A “chuck bucket,” is provided, but using it is an automatic disqualification. Also, if you miss the bucket, a $20 clean-up fee is added to the cost of the 4 Horsemen.

Barriba Cantina’s Spicy Cocktails Along with live music and Tex-Mex favorites, Barriba Cantina on the River Walk adds spice to its signature cocktails. The Mercadit is infused with jalapeno and mixed with El Jimador Silver Tequila, cucumber, cilantro, lime juice and a dash of sweet agave nectar. It will test separate the men from the boys. Named after the legendary South Texas vampire-like monster, the Chupacabra (“goat sucker”) features pineapple-infused El Jimador Silver Tequila along with ginger syrup, lime juice, pineapple juice and serrano pepper on the side. For an extra 75 cents, turn your beer into San Antonio’s zesty answer to the Bloody Mary, a Michelada. Recipes vary, but essentially a Michelada is a Mexican beer mixed with freshlysqueezed lime juice, Clamato, and assorted sauces, like Worcestershire, teriyaki, soy or hot sauce. The saltchili powder mix packed onto the rim of the chilled glass is an eye-popping and refreshing addition to the drink.

But if you successfully complete the challenge, your portrait – redfaced, watering eyes, drooping tongue and possibly steam spewing out your ears -- will be added to Chunky’s Burger Wall of Flame. Barriba Cantina

CULTURE & COMMUNITY Wonder Woman: Golden Lasso Coaster Twisting and turning above the 100-foot limestone quarry walls of Six Flags Fiesta Texas, you will feel like you’re being whipped around by Wonder Woman herself on Wonder Woman’s Golden Lasso. The attraction is the world’s first I-beam roller coaster, which debuted last May. The groundbreaking, open-air design provides, unobstructed view, a sense of falling, and a chorus of screams! The coaster climbs to a frightful 113-foot peak before taking a 100-foot nose dive at more than 50 miles per hour – a first for a ride at Fiesta Texas. The thrilling, 1,800-foot ride also features two “airtime hills” to separate riders from their seats, a zero-g roll, a 180-degree stall and overbanked turns. When entering the ride, thrill-seekers journey through a tropical landscape and ancient architecture found in Themyscira, Wonder Woman’s island home. A moving loading station helps to expedite individuals entering and exiting the ride. While the ride only lasts a minute, the coaster’s gravity-defying acrobatics make it seem like you are up there for hours! Wonder Woman joins two other DC superheroes with rides at the park – the Superman Krypton Coaster, which includes virtual reality goggles, and Batman: The Ride, the world’s first 4-D free-spin coaster.
